- Sharathon 2016
Praise the Lord, our goal was met BEFORE the end of the Sharathon! A heartfelt “thank you” from all of us for those of you that sacrificially gave to meet the financial needs of our power upgrade.
We’ll be providing updates here at kolu.com throughout the year as we plan and build the upgrade. Please continue in prayer, as we have lots of work to do, and pray for the safety and health of those doing the planning and actual construction.
What does 39,000 watts mean? Of course, KOLU’s signal will go farther, but there are other benefits of this higher power. Although our signal currently covers the Tri-Cities and Hermiston well, indoors the signal is often weaker, causing fading and noise. The increasing number of new electronic devices contributes to a greater amount of electrical noise that interferes with radio reception. The FCC continues to license more new stations in an already congested FM band, so our signal will stand out better with more power. We have many faithful listeners that are presently in “fringe”, or difficult to receive, areas. They will experience a much stronger signal.
The Lord continues to bless as we prepare to upgrade KOLU. We have located a 20,000 watt transmitter that is in very good condition for a fraction of the price of a new transmitter, and the Lord has also blessed us with most of the larger line necessary to connect the transmitter to the antenna, at about 1/10th the cost of new line. If we were to simply ask contractors to build this upgrade, the price would be $150,000 to $250,000. But, with the Lord’s help and the many skilled people that want to be a part of this ministry, we have a budget of $50,000 that includes the transmitter, line to connect the antenna, a phase converter that will provide 3-phase power for the transmitter, modification of our transmitter building, reconditioning of our tower, and many other items. Of course, more power means that our transmitter will use more electricity and increase our regular operating budget. Your prayers and financial help with this project are greatly appreciated.
